Dr. Michael Ensley

Associate Professor at the Lally School of Management & Technology at Rensselaer. Dr. Ensley is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on Entrepreneurial Management and Organization Theory


To Deliver an Address Entitled:

“Why Not to Use Financial Outcomes
to Assess the Quality of Management.”


Dr. Ensley will discuss the issues faced by venture capital and other private investors in the prediction of financial results and in the selection, evaluation and oversight of management teams. He will also focus on the dynamics of the interactions among new venture team members and the important roll that such interactions can play in affecting team
performance and financial outcomes.




Biographical Profile

Michael D. Ensley is currently an Associate Professor at the Lally School of Management & Technology at Rensselaer and is currently the Area Coordinator for the Management and Entrepreneurship Group. His research focuses on the development, composition, and dynamics of top management teams in young firms, the impact of technological change on decision making in new ventures, and the affect of fit in new ventures. His research is also focused on the development of shared strategic cognition and executive team decision shared cognition during the strategic decision making process. His research has appeared in the Journal of Business Venturing, Research Policy, The Journal of Management, Management Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Strategies, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management Review, Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, and Organization. He has severed as a consultant to New Ventures, Established Companies, Venture Capital, and Private Equity Firms. His clients include Cisco, Ford Motor, Nokia, Synopsys, E-Loan, FA Technology Ventures, Premiera, Texas Pacific Group, and others. He currently is serving on two company boards and has advised over 400 startups. Michael was the founder of the Academy Venture Fund and currently serves as an advisor to over 30 funds on their assessment of human capital. In total Michael has been connected with raising nearly $200 million dollars in money for startup companies. Michael holds a Doctor of Business Administration Degree from Mississippi State University.
