Keynote Speaker: Jim Tullis - Founder and CEO of Tullis-Dickerson & Co., Inc.

Keynote Address by Jim Tullis

- Rational Exuberance -
Life Sciences. Medical Technology. Healthcare.
“A New Perspective for the Venture Capital Investor”

Background & Overview

In 2003, U. S. venture capital investments totaled $18.2 billion in 2,715 companies, a decline of 15 percent from the previous year. Life sciences, including biotechnology and medical devices together, attracted $4.89 billion or 27 percent of all venture capital - the highest proportion directed to life sciences in the last 12 years. According to the Price Waterhouse/Thomson Financial - Money Tree survey, biotechnology received $1.1 billion of total investments in fourth quarter 2003 and was the leading industry category for the second consecutive quarter, outpacing software, which accounted for $978 million in the quarter. As a result of the continued dominance of life sciences and medical technology as venture capital’s investments of choice, our keynote speaker will be Jim Tullis, the founder and CEO of Tullis-Dickerson & Co., a leading venture capital firm that has invested almost exclusively in healthcare since inception. Jim will focus on the reasons behind this growing trend and what the future holds for VC investments in life sciences. Conference attendees will also learn which sectors are likely to produce the most profit as well as what consumer trend and demands will have the greatest effect on healthcare investments.
